Historical events that enriched the British Empire are rarely neglected but The Opium War rarely registers in its history. The thirst for tea, silk and porcelain changed the history of Britain and China - through the enforced trading of illicit opium for Chinese goods, the British Empire was expanded and enriched. But the trade war had devastating consequences for the Chinese Dynasty. The drawing reflects this neglected and hidden part of British history.
